Kyrene Budget Cuts

The following helpful information regarding Kyrene District Budget Cuts was compiled by the Parent Network, an organization of parents within the Tempe Union and Kyrene School Districts. Please read through the information so that you are aware of potential changes affecting our district.

Some important changes are coming for the next school year in Kyrene. This is the time to pay attention, so come August, there are no surprises when your child(children) returns to their school. Kyrene will be facing another year of serious budget cuts impacting the 2012-2013 school year. An estimated 3 to 5 million dollars will be slashed.

Please consider passing this information on to other parents and community members in your neighborhood and school. Everyone should be aware of upcoming changes in education impacting our kids.

Proposed cuts for 2012-13
Projected $5.3 million deficit.
Proposal to board:
- to fund free ADK (at an estimated cost of $2 million)
- reduce insurance prepayments-initiate a transfer of Capital Outlay Rev. Limit funds
Two revenue generating proposals:
- lease of land owned by the District
- an expansion of community education programs
Reductions in:
- transportation
- custodial services
- District Office budget
- Department and Staff
- math and literacy coaches
- other staff reductions
- changes to the middle school program

Revenue/savings from these proposals (including budget cuts for next year) is projected to range between $3.5 to $6.6 million.

Details on Middle School Program
Very little has been shared thus far on the proposed middle school changes. It is expected that some recommendation from the middle school task force will be shared at the Jan 10 study session. Thus far, the only details that have been shared are
- a budget reduction between $500,000 to $1 million (up to 18 positions being eliminated)
- a possible schedule consisting of six 60 minute classes (and no ac lab) which would reduce time in core classes, possibly increase class time in electives or allow for more elective choices w/ less instruction time (4 electives w/ AB rotation), possibly create special electives for intervention and/or enrichment.

Decisions on this will soon be made. Now is the time to voice your questions and concerns.

At the last Study Session/GB meeting, the district was asked to identify at least $800,000 in cost savings/revenue to cover part of the cost of ADK. It is expected that this will be shared at the study session.
It is also anticipated that preliminary recommendations from the middle school task force will be shared.

While the value of free ADK is not disputed, the GB and community have asked for a very clear picture of how paying for free ADK impacts all students at all levels. It is hoped that the details on where cuts will have to be made to pay for free ADK will be provided prior to the GB vote on ADK funding.

The Kyrene Governing Board is being asked to vote on the funding for All Day Kindergarten. Don't miss attending for your own assessment of reasons for their action and your opportunity to address the GB to express your opinion if you wish.
How to address the Governing Board: Audience members who wish to speak to the Governing Board, must fill out a blue card located on the table by the door. Once filled out, bring it to the front counter area. To the left, sits board secretary, Mary Ott, who will be happy to take these. Speakers are limited to 3 minutes. Amazing how this time flies, so if you want the board to understand your major points made, make 6 copies to give them. (One for each board member and one for Superintendent). The Board is not able to respond to comments made during the 5.0 section because those topics are not on the agenda.)

Seventh Grade Abstinence Education Lessons on 60 Day Review

Kyrene School District is near the end of a 60 day review process of adapted lessons from the “Worth the Wait” program for use with 7th grade for the 2011-2012 school year. These lessons support instruction of the Kyrene Expanded Health Curriculum Strand 9 (Growth & Development) and Strand 10 (HIV/AIDS/STIs). If these lessons are approved by the Kyrene Governing Board, trained instructors from Pima Prevention Partnership will deliver the instruction to seventh graders during the spring of 2012. As a reminder, parents must provide written permission for students to participate in these lessons. Alternate lessons are provided for those students whose parents choose for them not to participate.

All resources for the lessons and activities used during instruction are available for viewing during regular business hours at the Kyrene District Office, Curriculum and Learning Services Department until Tuesday January 3, 2012. Special evening viewing hours will be held on Tuesday, December 6 from 5-7 PM before the Kyrene Governing Board meeting and Wednesday 4-6 PM before the Traditional School parent meeting. Parents, teachers, and community members are encouraged to view and provide feedback related to the lessons. Override Election Results are IN!

Message from Kyrene Superintendent Dr. David Schauer

Thank you to the Kyrene School District community! The results have been tabulated and Kyrene’s override election was successful!

The capital override is a continuation of an existing secondary tax that has been in place for the past 7 years. This allows the district to raise additional funds above and beyond what’s granted by the state specifically for the purpose of supporting technology needs. Those items include several parent communication systems, payroll and transportation software, productivity programs like email, excel, powerpoint and tools for the classroom. What the continuation of this funding effectively does, is allow the primary state dollars to be used for things like teachers, learning supplies and utilities.

Thanks to the many community volunteers who stepped forward providing time and energy educating voters on this initiative. The Political Action Committee that worked on this effort, was led by Mitzi Epstein, former Kyrene Board member, and we thank her.

Kyrene remains committed to increasing the academic growth of all students. Your support of this vital funding helps us in that work.

“Can We Talk?” is a fun, interactive workshop that helps parents enhance their role in their children’s sexuality and health education. What you need to know before Nov 8th

On November 8th, Kyrene voters will be asked to approve the continuation of the current Capital Override.

IMPORTANT FACTS:

The ballot will say “BUDGET INCREASE” but it is in fact a renewal for the override passed in 2005. This wording is required by law.
This money funds Kyrene’s technology program
Since 2007, state funding for education has been cut by 18% (according to AZ Legislature’s JLBC)
This would continue taxes already in place – NOT AN INCREASE
Currently, for a $225,000 home, taxpayers are paying around $6 a month to support this initiative (about the price of a Happy Meal – and much better for our children!)

The 2005 Capital Override was used to fund things such as:

• Instructional curriculum, Word, Excel, Power Point and other software licenses for
10,000 computers supporting 18,000 students plus 2,000 teachers and staff

• Training for teachers to effectively integrate the technology as a tool to increase student
engagement and collaborative learning

• Student Achievement measurement tools for data collection

• Enrollment and Attendance software to efficiently track trends

• Classroom projectors and laptops

• Genesis System. Parents can view student grades and attendance

• Emergency Parent phone notification system

• Scheduled replacement of identified fleet vehicles over a 7 year period

Offered to the neighborhood: a pancake breakfast and Child Identification Kit (fingerprints, photos, etc.) - while supplies last.

A child disappears in a crowd at the fair. A toddler wanders out an open door. A teen doesn’t return from the mall. Every year, hundreds of thousands of kids in the U.S. are reported “missing." Here’s one important suggestion: have information that helps identify your child ready to hand to law enforcement the instant you report your child missing. The FBI recommends a kit that includes: Fingerprints, Cards detailing your child’s physical descriptions—including a body map for pointing out scars, birthmarks, and other identifying features, a current photo, an easy-to-use swab which stores a small DNA sample.

Come to the event where they will help you process your child's information in a free kit which you take home and keep in a safe place and provide the information to law enforcement agencies only in case of emergency. The Chandler Fire Department is planning on attending and bringing one of their engines.

There is no charge for the breakfast or the kits. We ask those who are able to donate non-perishable food items at the event which will be delivered to St. Mary's Food Bank.

This afternoon you will be getting a phone call to notify you that this morning two female students from Kyrene Middle School were approached by a white male in his 20’s or 30’s driving a silver, Toyota Limited Edition RAV 4 SUV near Waggoner Elementary School bus drop off near Terrace and Lakeshore. As you may be aware, there have been other community reports of this nature in recent weeks. The police request that the community report any suspicious activity by immediately calling 911.

We are sending you this message so that you can remind your children once again about safe practices when traveling to and from school.

Curriculum Nights: Please contact your teachers if you have questions. This information is from a past parent’s perspective.

The 6^th grade Curriculum Nights differ from the 7^th/8^th grade night. The 6^th grade teams meet separately and typically hold one large meeting with all parents. Sometimes students are invited (Spirit Dogs) but unless your team specifies that students are invited, you should assume that the meeting is geared toward the parents.

ALL of the 7^th and 8^th grade teams hold their Curriculum Nights together at the same time. Parents are encouraged to come with a copy of their student’s daily schedule. Parents meet in their child’s first period class and proceed to follow their child’s schedule throughout the evening meeting in each class for about 5 minutes. The bell will ring letting parents know when it’s time to switch classes. Students need not attend.

Courage Retreats:

Sponsored by Pueblo’s Administration, these retreats help our students find the Courage to stand up for what they believe to be right. They address bullying and how harsh words can affect others. This year we will have Courage Retreats are for our 6^th grade students in August and similar “Awareness Days” for our 7^th grade students later in the year. Our 8^th graders have the opportunity to participate in “Minitown”. For additional information about the Courage Retreats, please read a post from our blog written last year. Family Fitness 5K:

This is a professionally run event which offers our community a 5K or 1 mile run/walk. This year our event has been selected as an official Chandler Centennial Designated Event. With the city celebrating their 100 year birthday in 2012, they will be including our event in their advertising. This run generated over $4,000 last year. We combine our efforts with our sister school, Paloma to provide our community with this fun event. At Pueblo, we donate all funds earned through this run to our ABC (Action Brain Connection) program. This program helps encourage healthy, active kids at our school. If you are interested in helping to plan this event, the first meeting is at 3:00pm this Saturday, August 13^th in the Sunset Library’s Community Room.

Restaurant Nights:

Pueblo PTO hosts monthly Restaurant Nights. We like to call them “Eat for Pueblo Nights”. Everyone has to eat right? So why not take the night off and let someone else do the cooking and earn money for our school at the same time? You just need to show the flier when you order. This month we are eating with Jimmy & Joes Pizza just east of McClintock and north of Ray. The flier is attached.

School Store:
This is the 2^nd year that PTO has managed the school store. It’s a great place to stop in for all of your school spirit needs. The store is located in room J-8 and is open for business every Wednesday and Friday before school. Students should stop by and check it out. We also provide basic school supplies. Look for an online list of products and pricing coming soon. The school store also provides our NJHS students an opportunity to earn In-School service hours. We ask for 2 students and 1 adult to volunteer each day. Student Volunteers are open to 7^th & 8^th graders only. Look for signup information coming soon. PARENTS: Get your Pueblo windshield decal and show your school pride!

“A” & “B” Schedule Explained

We have lots of questions regarding the “A” & “B” Schedule. We hope the following will be helpful:

Every Monday and Thursday will be an “A” Day

Every Tuesday and Friday will be a “B” Day

Wednesdays will rotate weekly between the A and B Days. Week 1 will be an A day. Week 2 will be a B day. Etc.

The only classes affect by the switching are the electives. Students attend all core classes each and every day regardless of the A or B schedule.

The schedule is listed in the Student’s Planner as a reference. Fortunately, the kids are better at these types of things than we are! They will catch on quickly :)

The teachers and school are amazing. They will help the kids along the way. This is the 2nd year that our district has implemented this rotation. It went extremely smoothly last year and I expect the same will occur this year!

Dear Kyrene Community:

In last week’s edition of “Kyrene Communicates”, I outlined the recent budgetary challenges Kyrene has been experiencing. As I met this spring with parents, staff, school board and community members, I have been filled with pride as people describe the quality of the Kyrene Schools and the programs that they are passionate about.

As you know, over the past three years Kyrene’s funding from the state has decreased by 10 percent.This year, our deficit is over 4 million dollars. With these reductions, we simply must adapt to new ways of doing things. We are unable to provide exactly the same education as in the past. Staff, parents, community and school board members have had challenging conversations on balancing the budget for the upcoming school year.

The recommendations for 2011-2012 are:

• Over $700,000 in administration reductions

• Adjustment to the schedule for elementary classes in Library, Art, P.E. and Music.
Each subject will be taught 45 minutes per week.

• Class size ranges will increase by 1 student in kindergarten, 2 students in first and second grade, no change to third, fourth and fifth grades and 1 student in sixth through eighth grade. (See table below)

• Akimel A-al, Centennial, KMS and Pueblo on 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. schedule, Altadeña and Aprende on 8:15-3:15 schedule to save $500,000 in transportation costs

• Reductions of some social services/ prevention

• Reductions in district department budgets

• Reductions in school supply budgets

• Reductions in utility expenses

• Reductions in academic intervention

• Pursue revenue enhancements including web and bus advertising, field naming rights, increased preschools and other business partnerships.

As we look to the future, we must leave no stone unturned and will continue to examine efficiencies in every area of district operations from transportation to administration. Statewide, Kyrene is recognized as a district that maximizes dollars in the classroom and spends the least on administration. These priorities will continue. School districts across our nation are struggling to compensate for lost funding for education.

In Arizona the situation is particularly acute and we anticipate these challenges to continue for another few years. Thankfully, we are in a better position than other districts that have closed schools and/or completely eliminated programs like library, art, music and P.E.

We encourage parents, business leaders and others to suggest creative solutions that may result in budget savings. Cutting $5.3 million

The Parent Network is a non-profit organization, serving parents of Kyrene Elementary, Tempe Elementary and Tempe Union High School Districts.

They are providing us with critical district budget information that will affect our children beginning next school year. We are sharing this information with you so that parents are not caught off guard with the changes in our schools.

There are many updates. The Parent Network is suggesting that if you do not have time to read through all the updates, you may want to concentrate on the first three major changes listed below facing the Kyrene Elementary School District. There are also additional details provided in the attachments. We realize the following is a lot of information, but we wanted to pass it along to our PTO network. Also, at the end of this email is a list of upcoming meeting dates, so if you are interested in learning more and/or having a chance to ask questions of District officials, this is your chance.

Total M&O Budget Reduction/Deficit for 2011-2012 = $5.3 million

(In other words, $5.3 million needs to be CUT from the budget for the upcoming school year)

Proposed Reductions or Cuts for 2011-2012

1. Raise Class Size (lose teachers) grades K-3: increase by +2 students, grades 4^th-8^th:increase by +1 student

SAVINGS: $1,350,000

2. Change 4 middle schools start time to 9:00am. [PUEBLO, Akimel A-al, Centennial, Kyrene Middle School] (lose 14-15 bus drivers)

SAVINGS: $540,000

3. Change grades K-5 Specials [includes music, PE, art & library] (Note: library will now be considered a special in the rotation and be the same at all schools)

Current Specials Scheduling in Kyrene Schools:

· PE- twice a week for 30 minutes each

· Art- once a week for 40 minutes

· Music- twice a week for 30 minutes

· Library- varies among schools

THERE ARE 3 OPTIONS FOR THE GRADES K-5 SPECIALS SCHEDULING CHANGES:

OPTION 1:

Music, Art, PE and Library will be ONCE a week for 50 minutes each.

Teacher Hours-

· PE teachers go from 25 to 17.6 hours

· Music teachers go from 24.3 to 16

· Art teachers go from 15.6 to 17.6 hours

· Library goes from 19 to 17.6 hours

(total loss of teachers: 13.5)

SAVINGS: $756,000

OPTION 2:

Music, Art, PE and Library will all be ONCE a week for 45 minutes each.

Teacher Hours-

· PE teachers go from 25 to 16 hours

· Music teachers go from 24.3 to 16

· Art teachers go from 15.6 to 16 hours

· Library goes from 19 to 16 hours

(total loss of teachers: 19.9)

SAVINGS: $1,121,120

OPTION 3: (Hybrid)

PE stays like it is – twice a week for 30 minutes each

Music – once a week for 30 minutes each

Art stays like it is – once a week for 40 minutes each

Library would be once a week for 40 minutes each

Teacher Hours-

· PE teachers stay the same at 25

· Music teachers go from 24.3 to 16

· Art teachers go from 15.6 to 15.5 hours

· Library goes from 19 to 15.5 hours

(total loss of teachers: 11.9)

SAVINGS: $666,400-$722,400

4. District Office Reductions includes reduction in positions, budget & benefits

SAVINGS: $600,000

5. Prevention Services: Loss of Prevention Specialists at KMS & Centennial and Loss of Social Workers (from 4 positions)

SAVINGS: $220,000

6. Limit on Substitute Budget (not benefits)

SAVINGS: $500,000

7. Elementary School Gifted Program: combine 4^th and 5^th grades (already being done at some schools)

SAVINGS: $250,000

8. Grades K-3 IA Allocation – 15% reduction in allocation (pertains to use of aides)

SAVINGS: $150,000

9. Transition additional campuses to contracted custodians (will retain those long-term custodian employees. Note: some campuses already use contracted custodians)

SAVINGS: $120,000

10. Resource sharing among schools (for example, if a school needs 20 more desks, a search would be made throughout the district to find these, rather than order new ones)

SAVINGS:$75,000

11.Changes Temperature Settings for Heating and Cooling (raise in summer, lower in winter)

SAVINGS: $62,000

12: School Budget Reductions (includes non-personal budgets by 5% and change in allocation based on differentiated needs-based model)

SAVINGS: $141,000

13: Substitute Costs (eliminating stipend and require administrators to substitute)

SAVINGS: $40,000

14: Maximize Capital Override (some expense in personnel in technology will be shifted to Capital Override)

SAVINGS: $260,000

TOTAL SAVINGS: $4,874,000 - $5,329,000 (rounded to nearest $1,000 range because it depends what option is chosen for specials)

Additional information from last Kyrene Governing Board Meeting provided by The Parent Network:

Last night (4/26), at the Kyrene Governing Board Meeting, a list of 40 teachers to reduce in force was given to the board to approve.   The meeting lasted over 4 hours and at the end of the meeting, the vote was to approve.
    K to 6th grade: 27
    7th -8th grade Language Arts: 2
    K to 8th grade PE: 5
    K to 8th grade Music: 5
    K to 8th grade Art: 1
Under the budget agenda item there were approximately 15 speakers from the audience. (Note, this is Sandy Lowe's summary.)

· 4 Cielo parents in support of the Hybrid specials model

· 2 Librarians supporting Library as a "special" and consistent at all schools

· 2 social workers/prevention specialists supporting keeping these critical services at Centennial and KMS

· 3 PE teachers supporting the Hybrid specials model. One suggested a revenue generating idea of collecting a small amount of money from families to offset cuts.

· 1 classroom teacher supporting the process of the sub-committee made up of teachers, who brought recommendations to the K-8 committee regarding the Specials options

· 1 KMS parent asking for process involving shareholders in the community begin earlier than late April.

· 1 parent who was asking questions clarifying reasons for changes and offering revenue enhancement solutions as a possible alternative to cutting programs.

· 1 community member asking for consideration in providing more information about possible changes earlier in the year.

What's Next:

May 3rd at 4:30pm at District office:

K-8 program committee meeting with the governing board to discuss budget options.

This would be an excellent meeting for parents to attend to understand what changes are being considered and to see how governing members are responding to the proposals.

Dear Kyrene Community,

As you probably know, the Kyrene School District is nationally recognized for its excellent reputation. The District is located in established vs. growing neighborhoods and has experienced declining enrollment in the past. State funding is based mainly on student enrollment. However, for the first time in many years enrollment is stable and on the increase. This is a positive development but, due to the state’s economic crisis, the Kyrene budget has decreased by over 10% in the past three years. In 2008-09 it was approximately $107 million and is predicted to be approximately $95 million for 2011-12.

While other districts have closed schools and eliminated special programs like Art, Library, Music and P.E., Kyrene values experiences for children in all content areas including the special area classes.

Kyrene has been able to avoid cuts like these by:

• freezing employee wages

• using available Cash Reserves (savings account)

• reducing staff

Kyrene has had amazing community support to raise funds through bonds and overrides. These funds help us:

• reduce class size

• provide state-of-the-art technology learning tools that are integrated into children’s learning, making Kyrene’s technology program a national model

• secure our campuses

• maintain our buildings

• purchase buses

During the Kyrene budget process, over 130 efficiency ideas were brainstormed.

Which of these considerations would specifically affect your child’s school? Things being considered include:

1. Cuts to Administration

2. Program Reductions/Efficiencies

a. Elementary School Special Areas scheduling**

b. Transportation – Middle School Start & End Times

c. Gifted Program scheduling

d. Prevention Services

e. Substitute Budget

3. Class Size Range Adjustments*

Other ways to gather information on the budget process include:

• Governing Board Meetings and Study Sessions in person or via video - (Next meeting is Tuesday, 4/26)

• The Superintendent/Kyrene parent Video Sessions

• The Budget Pages (which include FAQ’s, Facts and Myths and a Feedback section)

• Talk with your Parent Superintendent Council (PSC) representative. (On a monthly basis each school sends a person to a meeting with me and we have provided them with facts on the budget)

Thank you for being a part of the Kyrene Elementary School District. While budget struggles have forced us to operate with reduced revenue for some time now, we are working hard to ensure that, despite those reductions, the community can continue to be proud of the education our children receive.

Seussical theater experience for grades 4 - 8

Students in grades 4 - 8 can participate in Kyrene School District's summer production of Seussical the Musical Jr., whether as a cast or crew member. It will be a memorable experience!

Auditions are coming up April 25 and 27 at Akimel Middle School in Ahwatukee. Performances are June 28 and 29 at KMS. All who audition will be part of the production.

Wishes Come True is a project in which several 8^th grade girls from each of our middle schools will be invited to come to the D.O. on Friday, April 29 to pick out a summer dress to wear to their 8^th grade promotion activities.

Everything will be donated, including gently-used dresses and new accessories such as simple jewelry, nail polish, lotion, hair ribbons, gift cards to Claire’s Boutique at the mall, etc. Please bring in any items to donate during the week of April 11 - 15. Donations will be accepted during regular business hours (7:30 a.m. – 4:45 p.m.) at Kyrene District Office, Ben Furlong Center, 8700 S. Kyrene Road, Tempe 85284.

Clarification on My Coke Rewards

We wanted to clarify HOW to donate your Coke points to Pueblo. There are 4 options:

1. Go to www.mycokerewards.com/schools and look for the “Find a School and Donate Points” area about halfway down the page. Enter in our zip code: 85226. Scroll through the list that appears and click on “KYRENE DEL PUEBLO MIDDLE SCH – Registered” and select “Continue”. Look under “SCHOOL FACT SHEET…” to sign in and donate your points. Everything you enter will be credited to Pueblo.

2. Drop the actual codes off in Pueblo’s front office

3. Email the codes to Amy Dawson adawson@kyrene.org

4. Email the codes to PTO and we’ll get them to the correct person Pueblo-PTO@hotmail.com

Volunteers will enter all codes turned in using option 2,3 or 4.

Need Spring Break Options for Keeping Your Teen Busy? Consider Officer Dieu's Youth Academy!
Please read the important message below from Pueblo's School Resource Officer Dieu. This wonderful program runs Monday-Friday, March 14-18 -- coinciding with Kyrene's Spring Break week. More details are provided below, but the highlights are this program is NO COST .... open to kids aged 12-17 ... lunch is included each day ....space is limited, so follow-up ASAP if you want to enroll your child.

The Chandler Youth Academy is a one-week program, which gives Chandler residents, age requirements are strictly 12-17, the opportunity to learn about various jobs and functions within the Chandler Police Department. Officers from the Traffic Unit, Patrol Division, Bike Team, K-9 and Community Resources and Training Section instruct students. Students get involved with hands-on activities which provides them with a valuable learning experience and insight into police procedures, such as use of force, forensics, crime scene investigation and much more.

The Youth Academy was created to develop citizen awareness and understanding of the role of law enforcement. The Youth Academy is designed to educate students that working together can promote a safer community.

The Youth Academy is held one week during the Chandler Unified School District’s intercessions. The Academy runs Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

There is no charge for the Academy, and lunch is provided. Space is limited.

The Ahwatukee Lions Club has organized a Citrus Drive to A. help you get your trees cleaned off, and B. feed the hungry. A quick recap of what PTO has been doing the past little while:

PTO gifted delicious handmade chocolates to every staff member as an appreciation for all their hard work first quarter

PTO will be donating $300 to help with Loretta Clayborne’s travel expenses. Read about Loretta and her amazing story here: www.lorettaclayborne.com or better yet – ask your child. All students have seen her inspiring video. She is a motivational speaker and will spend time with each team beginning February 7th.

PTO will provide a breakfast for Loretta Clayborne and the Avi8tor team. The Avi8tors were key in initiating the visit from Loretta.

PTO will cover the expenses for Weekly Readers for the Top Dawgs team.

PTO will donate $150 (in the form of a Zoo Membership to be auctioned off) to the Taste of Kyrene event. This event supports the Kyrene Foundation. Learn how this foundation supports our kids: www.tasteofkyrene.org

Below is the response from our school librarian who was trying very diligently to get something for Pueblo listed:
I just went on and checked the status and it is still "under review". It won't even post before the cards expire so I say put out an email thanking everyone for helping but to please go on the DonorsChoose website and donate their cards to another school. We didn't realize that the cards had to be used through DonorsChoose and that you had to have a project. We submitted a project last week and it hasn't posted yet. We learned a lot from this. Borders also wasn't happy when I called them because in order for us to order books we would have to order them through the DonorsChoose selected vendor which is Barnes and Noble!! What a fiasco. Sorry for the confusion. We didn't know this is what it was. It sounded like a great way to get some new books for the library.
I guess you can just say in the newsletter that we appreciate their support (we do!) and we did submit a project to the website that redeems the cards but the project hasn't posted and we don't want the cards to go unused so they should donate them to another school. I know there was one other Kyrene school that had a project posted. Thanks PTO!

Car Wash Gift Cards Available

I know sometimes people are hesitant to try a new company, so here is my two cents about the Car Wash:

CleanFreak Car Wash is owned by the Grondin family. The Grondin’s are the people who offered us the delicious treats at our carnival this year (the fresh kettle corn). They came referred to us by a Kyrene family and after meeting with them, I was thoroughly impressed with their professionalism and generosity. (By the way, I HIGHLY recommend their business Pure Concessions – they were GREAT at the carnival!)

Mr. Grondin offered the PTO Board several FREE car washes so that we could actually try out these facilities before presenting this opportunity to our families. I personally visited the wash on Chandler Blvd just east of Dobson and had a wonderful experience. I was most impressed with the cleanliness of the facility and the amazing staff member that greeted me. The attendant was so friendly and helpful that I actually called and let the business know how impressed I was with him. There was no up-selling or pressure to buy more. I used their free vacuums and left with a clean car inside and out.

These car wash gift cards are a GREAT DEAL! I am using them as stocking stuffers (yes, I will be adding a pack to my own stocking) and gifts for neighbors.

Members of the audience will be encouraged to write their questions on cards that will be read by the moderators, to be answered by the candidates.

This is a great opportunity for voters to get information about how the candidates might change the schools, or what aspects they'd continue.

For instance:

· TEST SCORES: What do you think should be done to improve test scores, especially for the demographic groups defined by NCLB?

· What will you do to help assure that all students receive an appropriate challenge, those who are below grade level and those who are above it?

· BULLYING: What do you think should be done about bullying? Do you think bullying affects student achievement? How?

· ELECTIVES: Are enough offered? Are they rigorous enough?

· Why do you think the district needs a bond and an override? Or do you think it does not?

· WORLD: What needs to be different in 10 years to support learning for the 21st century? What will you do next year to get the district there?

KITTENS: There are a few stray cats that call our campus home and one has had a litter of 3 kittens. A couple of the teachers are coordinating efforts to find homes for these little ones. If you are not able to adopt but would like to sponsor the neutering of the mamas that keep reproducing (this is the 3rd liter we’re aware of), I am sure the teachers would be grateful. Contact PTO and we will get you pointed in the right direction.

HUMAN TRAFFICKING: Last year our PTO invited a speaker from ALERT (traffickingaz.org) to share with us the dangers and reality of human trafficking in our area. We were taught how easily our children (middle school aged) are targeted and trapped. It was horrifying and educational. We have several teachers at Pueblo who are actively involved in helping to put an end to this worldwide epidemic. It is through their efforts that we were given the following information about an upcoming event about human trafficking. Please click on the photo below to enlarge.

Administrator of the Year – Mrs. Nacke!

When the judges considered Administrator of the Year nominations, they look at those who manage effectively, foster cooperation, encourage partnerships and play an active role in the success of their area of responsibility.

Jama Nacke of Chandler is this year’s Administrator of the Year. She’s in her first year as principal at Kyrene Pueblo Middle School, 360 S. Twelve Oaks Blvd. Chandler. According to her staff, she has faced death of a faculty member, broken air conditioners, injured staff members and lockdowns among other things and each challenge has been met with calmness and confidence. Nacke takes time each week to honor her staff and let them know they are valued, trusted and respected. She always has a smile on her face and a word of encouragement for others. Her nominators believe her competence in this job is a reflection of the years of training she’s had in Kyrene.

What is a Courage Retreat?

Curious about this myself, I attended one of the Courage Retreats last year so that I could share with parents what it was all about.

I was amazed! The group from Youth Frontiers was astonishing. I was in awe the way they engaged the middle school students. The message that they send is one that we could all benefit from, “Be a catalyst for change”. They not only encourage our kids to accept people for who they are, resist following the crowd and act with moral courage despite their fears – they TEACH them through real-life example how to do that. How to act with moral courage. How to resist following the crowd and how accept people for who they are.

If any of you have had 8^th grade students that have attended Mini-Town, think of these Courage Retreats as “mini” Mini-Towns! These high-energy, day long Courage Retreats are ran by extremely well trained staff from Youth Frontiers (click here to be taken to the Youth Frontiers website) and supported by several amazing High School Students who are volunteering their time to help make a difference in the lives of these middle school students.

Two things to remember:

#1- ASK, ASK, ASK!!! Inquire about the Courage Retreats when your child comes home. Find out what they learned and talk about ways that you can support them in trying to be a catalyst for change. I would even suggest talking with your child before the event. Talk about what your child thinks will happen. How they think this message will be received by the students. I promise you they will be blown away by how many students want to make a change. These are amazing kids. They are strong and confident. They do have the ability to make a difference and once they realize that there are many, many others out there who think the same way they do, they will be even more empowered to stand for what is right.

#2 – Come prepared. Your child should wear comfortable clothing and shoes that they can move in. I would suggest tennis shoes. This isn’t a sit down and get lectured kind of event. Your child will be engaged the entire day!

The school is requesting a $10 donation from each student’s family to help cover the cost of the Courage Retreats. The Prevention Services Grant that was used in the past is no longer available. ALL children WILL participate regardless of donations. However, if you are able, please consider sending in the donation to your child’s teacher to help offset the costs. They are also asking for students to bring a sack lunch if possible. A sack lunch can also be purchased through the cafeteria.

ALL students MUST HAVE a SIGNED PERMISSION SLIP to participate. Students should have already received one from their teachers. More are available, just ask your child’s teacher.

All in all, the Courage Retreats are an unbelievable opportunity for our students. They will help set the tone of the school year and for years to come. This is something your child will not forget.

Thanks Pueblo for helping to make our children well rounded, well educated individuals! You’re the best!

Education is important at every age. As the 2010 Arizona Primary Elections approach it is important that we as adults are educated about the candidates. A B Schedule Changes

There will be a change to the typical A B Schedule that Pueblo is familar with. District policy was changed and the new rotation will go as follows:

Every Monday and Thursday will be an “A” Day

Every Tuesday and Friday will be a “B” Day

Wednesdays will rotate weekly between the A and B Days. Week 1 will be an A day. Week 2 will be a B day. Etc.

The only classes affect by the switching are the electives. Students attend all core classes each and every day regardless of the A or B schedule.

Additional information will be coming from the school shortly. Fortunately, the kids are better at these types of things than we are! They will catch on quickly :)

The teachers and school are amazing. They will help the kids along the way. I feel confident that this switch will go quickly and smoothly for our kidos!

Making A Difference Together

This year PTO will be focusing on ways that we, as parents, can Make A Difference at our school this year.

PTO is committed to getting information in the hands of parents. Gone are the Friday folders chuck full of fliers and notices.

Middle schoolers tend to 'forget' things from the time they leave the campus until the time that they come home. (Remember in grade school when they would start pulling things out of their backpacks in the car on the way home? They were always so excited to share. Sigh... the good ole' days) Our main form of communication from the school is the monthly Pueblo newsletter. Subscribe Here To supplement that monthly publication, the PTO strives to provide parents with updates throughout the month as the need arises. You may be surprised to know that there are many ways to be involved at Pueblo. The old cliché that middle school teachers don't want you around is false. They do need support - just in different ways!

Gone are the hours spent sitting with grade schoolers cutting and pasting -- but never fear opportunities are here!

PTO is committed to giving parents an opportunity to be involved in any way that they can.

We know that a large majority of our parents work and are unavailable during the school day - so we have opportunities for you to help in the evenings.

We know that some of our parents want to help in the daytime and desire to see the inside workings of our school - so we have opportunities for daytime volunteers.

We know many of our parents can't find time to spare - so we have opportunities for participating through donations.

Yes, we would LOVE to have each and every family at Pueblo join the PTO as ALL of the money goes directly into our school (no national/state dues). You will also recieve by email, monthly PTO meeting minutes. However, PTO membership is NOT necessary for involvement at Pueblo. Anyone and everyone is encouraged to be involved!

Proposition 100 Update

With the passing of Proposition 100 yesterday. Our district will move forward with PLAN A.

From the Kyrene District Website:

Sales tax vote on May 18 will impact Kyrene budget

Education is a large percentage of the state budget and subject to Arizona’s economic climate. The good news is that Kyrene has excellent fiscal management and has been proactive in maximizing savings. The district has had wonderful community support in approving overrides and bond initiatives.

Kyrene is proud to maximize dollars spent in the classroom and is well above state averages in dollars kept in the classroom. The district is also well below averages in administrative spending. Currently Kyrene is in the process of developing two budget scenarios.

Plan A assumes that Proposition 100, 1% sales tax initiative, passes on May 18, 2010. If no additional cuts come from the State, Kyrene will experience an approximate $6M deficit which can be managed for one year through a conservative 2009-10 budget which prepaid allowable expenses, thereby reducing expenditures for 2010-2011 by utilizing restricted and unrestricted reserves and through identifying increased efficiencies. This means Kyrene will not experience overall class size increases or across the board base pay reductions for employees.

Six “Kyrene 2010 and Beyond” forums have been held across the district during the past few weeks. An important part of the information shared at these forums is about current budgetary challenges; however, there’s also a focus on future plans to ensure Kyrene continues to thrive and grow in the 21^st Century. At past forums, we were asked to create an informational email that could be used to send to colleagues, family members and friends. You’re welcome to forward this message to others.

The district has actually prepared two budgets for next year depending on the outcome of the May 18th vote on the temporary sales tax increase. Two thirds of that temporary sales tax is scheduled to go to education. The table below provides highlights from the two possible budget plans. For more details on the Kyrene Budget and how our schools will be impacted next year, visit the Kyrene Budget page.

If Sales Tax Passes = Plan A

· $6 million dollar deficit

· Keep existing class size ranges

· Recall most of the teachers subjected to the Reduction in Force (RIF)

· No decrease to employee salaries

· Deficit is managed because of conservative budgeting and operational efficiencies

If Sales Tax Does Not Pass = Plan B

· $11.8 million dollar deficit

· Class size ranges increase by 3 students

· Few (if any) teachers subjected to the Reduction in Force (RIF) are recalled

· Employee salaries reduced as much as 5%

· Deficit is managed because of conservative budgeting, operational efficiencies and the list above

Honoring Ms. Puetz

Our Pueblo teachers have decided an amazing way to honor their dear friend Terri Puetz, a Pueblo teacher who died earlier this year from cancer, would be to create an award in her honor.

One student from each 8th grade team was chosen. These students have demonstrated courage and a commitment to their education despite facing difficulties or troubled times.

Teachers throughout the school donated in Ms. Putez’s name and each student will be awarded $50.

Pueblo is an amazing place to be!

The Lynn Walker Character Award

The Lynn Walker Character Award was created by Mr. Rob Walker, a 8th grade Science teacher on the Tops Dawgs Team. A brief explanation from Mr. Walker:

My wife, Lynn Walker, passed away from breast cancer a little over 2 years ago. I wanted to honor her and her legacy of education, altruism, and solid character so I created an award in her name that all 8th graders are eligible for... This is my way of keeping her name and legacy alive and it means a lot to me.

Pueblo students who apply, must write a one page report on “What is Character and Why is it Important”. The students themselves must exhibit good character. This is verified by obtaining the signatures of 2 of their current core teachers. A small panel of staff evaluates all entries and chooses the winners.

Those who receive this prestigious award are acknowledged at an assembly and presented with $50 cash. Mr. Walker personally provides part of the money as a tribute to his beloved Lynn (he has provided it all funding for the past 2 years) and this year PTO has donated $400 to help supplement the overall costs.

For the 2009-2010 school year, we have 16 winners out of 31 applicants. An assembly will be held on Thursday, May 13th at 6:30 in Pueblo’s gymnasium.

Frequently Asked Questions From Budget Forums

Explanation: The goal of sharing and posting these FAQ’s is to provide factual and accurate information about the budget challenges facing the school district and plans to provide for a prosperous future. The questions below have emerged from the first two forums (entitled Kyrene 2010 and Beyond) that were recently held.

1. Why are some Kyrene teachers being told that they may not have a job next year?

Due to the current economic climate, The Arizona Legislature passed an 8 percent cut to education funding. Governor Brewer proposed a temporary sales tax increase to close the current budget shortfalls. This measure will be on the ballot May 18, 2010.

Arizona State law requires that teachers must be notified if they are not receiving a contract by April 15^th. Not knowing the outcome of the temporary one cent sales tax vote, school districts across the state, including Kyrene, have had to prepare for the worst, which is a 12 million dollar deficit in our budget.

2. Last year the same thing happened (referred to as RIF, which stands for Reduction in Force) and then most of the teachers ended up being called back. Will the same thing happen again this year?

If, during the May 18th election, voters approve the one cent sales tax, most of the teachers laid off in April will be offered jobs in May because the cost saving measures to balance the worst case budget scenario will not be needed.

3. What kind of cost-cutting measures can teachers and parents expect?

We have developed two budget plans (A and B) for what will happen with or without the sales tax passage. Plan A calls for increased efficiencies and minor changes that along with past conservative budgeting will allow the district to manage the 6 million dollar deficit called for. Plan B calls for increased class sizes and compensation reductions for all employee groups, in addition to the above to manage the 12 million dollar deficit that would result from decreased educational funding without the sales tax passage.

4. How is it that Kyrene can manage the Plan A deficit without major changes to programs in the district?

Kyrene deliberately implemented conservative fiscal management over a number of years by pre-paying allowable expenses and saving as much money as the law allows. This is the same idea as a family budget plan where debt is kept to a minimum and expenses are not allowed to exceed income. The good news is that Kyrene is at the top in the State when it comes to putting money into the classroom and is at the bottom of the state with how much money it spends on administration.

5. Are cuts to programs like art, music, physical education, library and other special areas planned?

No. These programs are considered to be an integral part of the educational program provided for all students.

6. Will any other programs be cut?

State funding for programs like Middle School Resource Officers has been cut and the State will only be funding 20% of what they normally provide for Soft Capital, which is how we buy our supplies and books. There may be other reductions from the State that will force additional changes to programs.

7. If the temporary one cent sales tax doesn’t pass, will teachers be the only ones affected?

No. With a 12 million dollar deficit in the Kyrene budget, the district will have to make unprecedented changes. Parents will most notice a change in class size. It’s anticipated that the average increase will be 3 more students per classroom. This impacts teachers and students in many ways. Additionally, overall compensation for administration, teachers, and support staff will be reduced.

8. With the budget challenges, why does Kyrene plan to continue offering free Full Day Kindergarten when the state has pulled the funding?

This decision is for the 2010-2011 school year. The learning needs and welfare of students is the primary consideration in any decision that gets made in the Kyrene School District and offering the program is clearly in their best interests. In addition, the future of the entire district is at stake as we are funded by enrollment numbers and surrounding districts offering the program would likely see an influx of kindergarten students who reside in Kyrene boundaries.

9. What new programs are planned and why?

Three innovative programs are planned because of their appeal to families and because they are nearly cost neutral to implement. As a district located in mostly built-out neighborhoods, we have gradually declining enrollment, so with the additions of the Dual Language Program, Leadership Academy and Accelerated College Preparatory Academy we hope to encourage more students to stay in or to choose Kyrene schools. More specific information about locations and timelines will be shared in the near future.

10. Why isn’t the school district doing more to tell people how they should vote on May 18th (the date of the election for proposition 100 for the sales tax)?

As a public school district, we are governed by certain laws that prohibit us from using public resources to influence the outcome of an election. However, we can provide factual information regarding the impact on schools should the vote pass or not pass (below).

Why will there be a temporary one cent sales tax increase on the May 18th ballot?

It is to raise revenue for public safety, health and human services, and public education (K-12 and colleges and universities).

How long will the sales tax increase be in effect?

The increase will be in effect for three years, expiring May 31, 2013.

How will the monies raised from the increase be distributed?

Two-thirds of the revenues raised will be allocated to Public Education; one-third of the revenues raised will be allocated to Public Safety and Health & Human Services.

Of the monies allocated to public education, how much goes to
K-12 the first year?

Approximately $429 million will go to K-12 public education for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2010.

Is this $429 million for K-12 public education considered to be new money for schools?

No. These monies will help cover the state’s budget shortfall. Without it, we will see further cuts to education funding.

What is the impact to school districts if the one cent sales tax increase ballot measure does not pass?

If the ballot measure does not pass, there will be a significant impact on funding for education. This lack of additional revenue from the State would almost double the Kyrene budget deficit to $11.8M. At that point, Kyrene would have to implement more drastic measures like increased class sizes, employee pay reductions, and changes to programs.

Why is it that school districts don’t advocate for the community to vote one way or another? What are the rules that govern elections and determine appropriate and inappropriate uses of district resources and staff?

1) Employees can engage in political activities, including campaigning during off hours, as private citizens (during non-duty time, while off of school district property). Employees must not represent that they are acting on behalf of the school district while engaged in activities to influence the outcome of an election.

2) Employees may express their opinions or preference on elections while off of school district property and outside of work role.

3) Employees may have bumper stickers, etc. on their private vehicles while the vehicle is parked in a parking lot owned by the district.

4) The use of district equipment, supplies, materials, buildings, or other resources to influence the outcome of any election is not permitted. This includes the use of district e-mail, district public address system, etc.

5) The collection of campaign funds, the solicitation of campaign workers, and/or the solicitation of signatures may not be done during work time or on school district property.

One HUGE concern on parent’s minds are the massive budget cuts for education. The Kyrene District has planned and prepared allowing us to absorb some of the initial blows that have come our way. Therefore, war are in a far better position than most districts.

BUT CHANGES ARE AHEAD!

We, as your PTO Board, feel that our parents need to be informed about upcoming ballot items and how they will affect our children. You will see many items over the next few weeks posted to our blog that will lead you to areas where you can find reliable information about what changes to expect. It is not our intention to sway you in anyway – but to inform you so that you can make educated decisions and be prepared for what lies ahead.

I would encourage each of you to go to the district website regularly and read through all of the information as it is updated frequently. KYRENE BUDGET PAGE

Please notice that 2 budget scenarios have been presented. By going to the above website you will find a link “Budget strategy on staffing and compensation variables”. This link shows what will happen within Kyrene in the very near future.

We WILL face cutbacks – either way.

Budget Scenario A shows the proposed budget WITH the Sales Tax Increase (Prop 100). You will notice that WITH the increase Kyrene will have a DEFICIT of $6 million.

Budget Scenario B shows the proposed budget WITHOUT the Sales Tax Increase (Prop 100). The deficit for Kyrene WITHOUT this increase will be $11.8 million.

Proposition 100 is a 1% sales tax initiative (not to include food items) that will be voted on STATEWIDE, on May 18th. Request an early ballot (that can easily be mailed in or dropped off that day) online with just your driver’s license number here: EARLY BALLOT REGISTRATION

There are many groups out there that are working hard to prevent or minimize continued decreases in educational funding. These groups send out emails that will help keep you informed and offer you opportunities to help make a difference.

Because we are limited to what can and can’t be shared in order to remain neutral in all issues, we must encourage you to find out on your own what can be done to support education in Arizona. We can however advocate for any issues we deem important from our own personal email/telephone numbers.
